Helvetia, Oregon: A Small Farming Community with Strong Roots
Located north of Hillsboro, Helvetia (pronounced Hel-VAY-sha) is a rural, agricultural area, which is home to several farms, and historic sites, many of which are on the Vineyard and Valley Scenic Tour Route, which starts (or ends, depending in which direction it is traveled) in Helvetia.
The unincorporated Washington County community of Helvetia has strong roots. This area was settled—and named—by Swiss immigrants in the 19th century. Each year, the community hosts the Helvetia Culture Fest, which celebrates the Swiss and German settlers and the ancestral Native Americans.
Founded by Swiss immigrants, the community of Helvetia abounds with farms, with crops ranging from lavender and wine grapes to pumpkins and peaches.
Helvetia showcases the region’s history with pioneer cemeteries and historic churches, including the Old Scotch Church, which is among Oregon’s oldest churches still in use. Pioneers, including Joseph Meek, are buried in the church’s cemetery.
Several farms, including Helvetia Vineyards and Winery, Roloff Farms and Helvetia Lavender Farm are located here. The highly-renowned, Smithsonian-affiliated Rice Museum of Rocks and Minerals is also located here.
